Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) is investing in transformative athletic infrastructure to strengthen recruitment, elevate competition, and position West Central Indiana as a destination for both collegiate sports and equine events. This all-encompassing project supports SMWC’s commitment to innovation, opportunity, and regional economic growth.
As a founding member of the groundbreaking Midwest Sprint Football League, SMWC has brought national attention to the region by offering a unique pathway for student-athletes typically overlooked by traditional football programs. The league’s inaugural season drew over 1,000 visitors to campus, with a team comprised of players from 14 different states. To build on this momentum, SMWC will add dedicated football amenities, including a campus practice field and locker rooms—strengthening its ability to host events and expand recruitment.
Equally impactful is the development of the SMWC Equine Event Center, a facility that will position the West Central region as Indiana’s leader in equine events on local, state, and national platforms. The center will feature an indoor event arena with stalls, concessions, restrooms, meeting rooms, and office space. This state-of-the-art facility will complement SMWC’s nationally renowned Equine Program and introduce a high-growth industry to northwestern Vigo County—serving as a catalyst for development across the region, including nearby counties in both Indiana and Illinois.
Together, these investments will establish SMWC as a regional hub for sports and equine excellence—enhancing athletic facilities for all SMWC teams while driving tourism, industry engagement, and economic opportunity throughout West Central Indiana.
